Scott Kirton
In the Greenville Grrrowl's second season, many new faces have
hit the home ice. One new face is the team captain #29 Scott
Kirton. Kirton hails from Pentanguishene, Ontario, Canada. He
began his playing career with the University of North Dakota.
Following four years of college hockey, Kirton was drafted by
the Boston Bruins in 1995, and was immediately sent to the Charlotte
Checkers, who were then coached by John Marks.
Along with other current Grrrowl players (Jason Kelly, Charlie
Paquette, Nick Vitucci), the Checkers won the ECHL Championship
in the 1995-96 season. " We started off the year with a
losing streak, but every game we got better," he said.
Kirton also saw time that same season with the Providence Bruins.
After two seasons with Charlotte, Kirton hit the ice for the
Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL, and was quickly traded to Columbus.
Kirton spend the remainder of the season in Columbus, then was
called up to Fort Wayne of the IHL, where here finished out
the last 10 games of the year. Last season Scott found himself
playing in Great Britain for the London Knights of the BISL.
He wanted to come back to the ECHL in 1999-2000, and John Marks
called on #29 again, and Kirton made his way to Greenville,
South Carolina. "It has been exciting for everyone involved,
" said Kirton of taking first place in the ECHL's Southeast
Division. "We have a good team, and a good mix of talent."
In fact, Kirton sees many similarities between the current Grrrowl
and the Charlotte Checker team that won the Championship. "
There are many similarities.
Both teams have many first year guys, also, in both situations,
with every game the team seems to get better. Marks is doing
a lot of the same things that he did in Charlotte." Scott
Kirton's role for the Grrrowl is not one of just a player, instead
he has been chosen as team captain. "I was honored when
John Marks chose me as the team captain, " said Kirton.
"When I made the decision to go with Scott as captain,
I felt that he had the experience and maturity in the game to
be a good captain, and I think he has accepted that role of
captain is fulfilling that role very well" said Head Coach
John Marks. " He has become even more committed to the
game, and has benefited from that." Kirton knows that only
100% effort every day is the only way to stay on top of the
division and go deep into the playoffs.
The Pee Dee Pride today announced that they have
signed veteran right wing Scott Kirton to a contract.
30.01.02 Kirton, 30, is no stranger
to the East Coast Hockey League. He played the last two seasons
with the Pride's Southeast Division rival, the Greenville Grrrowl.
The six-foot-four, 215-pound Kirton enjoyed his best professional
season two seasons ago with the Grrrowl. In 59 games he posted
25 goals and 50 assists for 75 points to go along with 135 penalty
minutes. That season he was a teammate of current Pride head
coach Davis Payne, and helped lead Greenville to the Southern
Conference Finals.
In six professional seasons, Kirton has played with four ECHL
teams. In addition to the Grrrowl, he has also skated for the
Charlotte Checkers, Wheeling Nailers and Columbus Chill. Kirton
has played in 317 ECHL games scoring 106 goals and 187 assists
for 293 points and 780 penalty minutes. He has also played eight
games at the American and International Hockey League level.
He spent the entire 1998-99 season overseas, playing for the
London Knights in the British Super League. In 40 games with
the Knights, he posted 21 points and 42 penalty minutes.
"Scott is a proven player in this league, and he will certainly
add some scoring and a big presence to our line up," Pride
head coach Davis Payne said. "He brings size, skill and
veteran leadership to the ice, which are all things that will
help our team as we move toward the playoffs."
Kirton should be in the line up Thursday night when the Pride
continue their eight-game road trip with a game at Baton Rouge.
The Pride will return home to face the Charlotte Checkers on
Friday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the
Florence Civic Center Box Office, or through
